Masses of Nix and Hydra

چکیده
A four-body orbit solution for the Pluto system yields GM values of 870.3 ± 3.7, 101.4 ± 2.8, 0.039 ± 0.034, and 0.021 ± 0.042 km3 s−2 for Pluto, Charon, Nix, and Hydra, respectively. Assuming a Charon-like density of 1.63 gm cm−3, the implied diameters for Nix and Hydra are 88 and 72 km, leading to visual geometric albedos of 0.08 and 0.18, respectively, though with considerable uncertainty. The eccentricity of Charon’s orbit has a significant nonzero value; however, the 0.030 ± 0.009 deg yr−1 rate at which the line of apsides precesses is insufficient to explain the difference in the longitude of periapsis seen in the orbits fitted to the 1992–1993 and 2002–2003 data sets. The mean orbital periods for Hydra, Nix, and Charon are in the ratios of 6.064 ± 0.006 : 3.991 ± 0.007 : 1, but we have not identified any resonant arguments that would indicate the existence of a mean motion resonance between any pairs of satellites.

The Effect of Charon’s Tidal Damping on the Orbits of Pluto’s Three Moons
Pluto’s recently discovered minor moons, Nix and Hydra, have almost circular orbits, and are nearly coplanar with Charon, Pluto’s major moon. This is surprising because tidal interactions with Pluto are too weak to damp their eccentricities. We consider an alternative possibility: that Nix and Hydra circularize their orbits by exciting Charon’s eccentricity via secular interactions, and Charon ...
متن کاملThe Evolution of the Pluto System
A giant impact origin of Pluto’s large satellite Charon leaves Pluto initially spinning rapidly and Charon in a close, eccentric orbit[1]. With coefficients J2 and C22 in the gravitational fields of both bodies included, we follow the evolution of the system with tidal models that demonstrate spin-orbit resonance capture and escape and damped librations while conserving angular momentum. We use...
متن کاملOn the Origin of Pluto’s Minor Moons, Nix and Hydra
How did Pluto’s recently discovered minor moons form? Ward and Canup propose an elegant solution in which Nix and Hydra formed in the collision that produced Charon, then were caught into corotation resonances with Charon, and finally were transported to their current location as Charon migrated outwards. We show with numerical integrations that, if Charon’s eccentricity is judiciously chosen, ...
متن کاملFirst Constraints on Rings in the Pluto System
Simple theoretical calculations have suggested that small body impacts onto Pluto's newly discovered small satellites, Nix and Hydra, are capable of generating time-variable rings or dust sheets in the Pluto system. Using HST/ACS data obtained on 2006 February 15 and 2006 March 2, we find no observational evidence for such a ring system and present the first constraints on the present-day I/F a...

Context. Investigation of transneptunian objects, including Pluto and its satellites, by stellar occultations. Aims. Derive precise, astrometric predictions for stellar occultations by Pluto and its satellites Charon, Hydra and Nix for 2008–2015. Construct an astrometric star catalog in the UCAC2 system covering Plutos sky path. Methods. We have carried out in 2007 an observational program at t...
